Steps to take before breeding your dog

Step 1: Learn about the breed of your dog

Breeders who wish to do their job responsibly intend to improve the breed and choose beneficial options for the dog. Breeding a purebred dog is expensive, consumes a lot of time, and sometimes gets complicated. To get the most out of breeding your dog, equip yourself with knowledge.

Do genetic screening, health checks, and an overall historical background check of the breed of your dog. Do ample research on the canine’s health and how your dog’s breed has previously been bred. Meet the owners of various dogs and seek information on how their dog performs when in action. Observe the dogs by keeping in mind that you want to improve your dog’s health and lifestyle by bringing a quality pet into this world.

Step 2: Choose an ideal mate

When breeding your dog, you may want the perfect dam to breed with your dog or vice versa, but narrow it down to a mate that you know will compliment your dog in all aspects. Know your dog’s temperament as for generations, dogs are bred so that they may have improved traits and qualities. Pulling a sled, following scents or trails, or being aware of their surroundings are a few examples of breeding for specific traits.

Step 3: Setup a contract

Jot down all the details, agreements, and conditions in a contract before your dog goes through the breeding process. By writing down the fees for the breeding, narrow down all the circumstances and consequences that may occur. Point out the obligations the opposite party is liable to before the breeding. They might request a puppy from the litter that will be born or wants a cash payment. Sort out all the details before you proceed.

Step 4: Health checks

Ensure that your dogs have been regularly exercising and having nutritious meals that keep them healthy. Ensure that the female has had a proper cycle and both are in good physical and mental condition.
