How to Whelp a Litter of Puppies

litter of puppies

When your dog is about to whelp a litter of puppies, you should be prepared beforehand. Some signs will let you know that she is ready. She will start producing milk up to a week before. She will start breathing heavier and digging to create a safe space to deliver her puppies.

What you should do before whelping

You should ensure that you have proper bedding that lets your dog be comfortable and makes her feel calm. Find the most appropriate whelping box that is soft, quiet, and warm and makes the dog feel relaxed.

Purchase necessary items such as towels, cleaning equipment, and a heating pad for warmth, food, and water. When you feel that contractions have taken over an hour, consult with your vet to ensure that everything proceeds smoothly. Consulting with your vet can help you to avoid dangerous situations.

How to proceed the first three days after birth

Keep checking on the puppies and see if your dog is nursing properly.  Make sure all of the puppies are able to nurse and not are getting left out.  If a puppy is laying on its side and has little drive compared to its siblings or is restless and crying far more than the others, those are warning signs you should check with your vet.

When you whelp a litter of puppies, you have a huge responsibility as newborn puppies are now under your care. Do your research, talk to your vet, and be prepared to do your best to provide a healthy start for these puppies.
